In the spring of 1932 my grandparents awakened their four children in the middle of the night, piled into a model-T Ford pick up truck, and abruptly left their home in New York City for Canada.
They abandoned everything - driving into a life of crushing rural poverty in the Appalachians of Quebec and northern New Brunswick.
New York was rarely spoken of again.
My name is Sonja Koenig.
I am a Canadian journalist on a search for answers: about why they fled 851 Gates Avenue.
